A Story of Two Sisters At mankind's beginning, as civilization was beginning to grow and thrive, each nascent culture had their own gods. There were gods for each specific domain imaginable. Myths of benevolent creators, their believers praying for wealth and prosperity. These gods were created by mankind, for mankind, but as time passed and mankind aged, most of the gods fell out of favor, and faded in power until they were nothing more than myth and legend.
But, there are two gods-- or, rather, goddesses-- who remain to this day. Two sisters, who once were human, who were selected to sacrifice themselves to become immortal powers, tasked with looking over humanity as it evolved. Their culture believed that humanity needed a watchful eye at all times, and so one god would not do. Surely, even gods need to sleep. And so, it was decided the sisters would ascend as a pair. One to keep watch during the day, and one by night. Through the millennia, they have taken many faces and used many names. They walk among mankind when it suits them, taking turns to fulfill their duties in the heavens. In modern times, they go by "Sunny" and "Shade," the first effervescent and optimistic, the latter scathing and taciturn. They compliment each other, for what is one without the other? There is no light without darkness, no darkness without light.
• Shade is the older sister, for before there was the sun, the sky was an endless sea of night. She takes her responsibilities more seriously than her sister, and is just more serious in general. She may be demanding, with high standards, and treats most people with a cold indifference that takes a long time to break through, but she truly has a soft spot for Sunny, and would do anything for her. • Sunny is the younger sister, but she tends to speak for the both of them (whether Shade wants her to or not). She's easy-going and playful, and never holds a grudge for long. Where Shade is reserved, Sunny wears her heart on her sleeve. She feels a lot of emotions and she feels them strongly. She's largely an extrovert, but there are some days when she needs to take some alone time, and lets the sun hide behind some clouds until she is ready to come out again. She argues with Shade from time to time, but trusts her older sister to always have her back. • The sisters have been ascended for so long that neither of them really remembers much of their human lives before their sacrifice. Sunny still daydreams sometimes about what life must have been like back then, but Shade genuinely has no interest in nostalgia. |
